Unit Five - Human Rights
During this unit you will learn all about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and how this declaration changed the world in 1948. Of course, bad things still happen in the world, but through the UDHR, people who violate the rights of others are now being disciplined for their actions.
During this unit students will investigate culture and how it shapes a persons identity. We will also then look at how different cultures use their culture in their day to day lives. We will also look at how a person's life would change if their culture is taken away.
Specifically, students will learn about the Residential School System in Canada, United States and Australia. We will look at historical pictures from these schools and analyze them from a historical perspective (Assignments below).
Through this unit it is hoped that students will understand that no matter who you are, or who you work with, we are all the same. We are people, and as such, we all deserve to have the same rights. Our way of life and choices in life will all be different, but, if we choose to respect the rights of those in this world, it will be a happier place. It is for this reason that students will research someone in the past who has made a difference in the world in regards to the rights of others. This assignment is also found below. Students will be creating a visual representation of Human Rights during this unit that will be composed into a group piece of work. All students will complete 2 pages of a book that will ultimately be constructed into a Grade 7 project.

- The Sheffield Africa Geography Maps game will help students come to a better understanding of Africa's political layout.
Unit TEN: Colonialism
Colonialism is one of the key concepts to comprehend when we try to understand Africa's many political struggles. Empire-minded countries in Europe created colonies in other continents intended to support the "mother country." These colonies formed many of the political borders and countries that still affect Africa today.

two Useful Videos
These two videos are fast-talking, but useful summaries of colonization on a worldwide scale. Both of them feature sections specifically focused on Africa.
